SWT is a graphical widget toolkit for application programming in Java.  The open source project is supported by the Eclipse Foundation, developers of the successful Eclipse IDE.  SWT is considered a "heavyweight" toolkit because it provides lightweight Java wrapper objects around "heavy" native objects.  As they utilize the same underlying code, the SWT widgets give Java applications the same look and feel as native applications.  This creates an familiar interface for new users and promotes intuitive adoption.
